LG G7 could come with an advanced iris scanner, patent reveals

LG can be credited as one of the early brands to kick off the bezel-less trend this year when it launched its G6 flagship. The smartphone features slim bezels all around the display to provide an 18:9 aspect ratio. The company is expected to continue the full-screen design with the LG G7 next year, and we are now hearing that the upcoming flagship could also sport an advanced iris scanner as well.

A patent recently surfaced via LetsGoDigital gives us a look at an iris scanning technology that seems to do more than just unlock the phone. As per the report, the technology will also help users protect sensitive information stored in the phone. What this means is that the iris scanning sensors will open certain sensitive apps only if it recognises you as the owner of the phone. The reports notes that the advanced iris scanner will register changes in the iris size and will set up a light screen or dark screen depending on how much light gets to it.

While iris scanners work with infrared light, LG has reportedly developed a camera which can switch from an infrared to a regular one. This could possibly reduce the number of sensor needed for the biometric technology, which could mean even smaller bezels on the top for the G7.

Way back in May, rumours about LG's next flagship started rolling with reports that the G7 could sport Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 processor. While the next-gen chipset is expected to power most flagship Android devices next year, it isn't entirely sure that the G7 will be one of them. To recall, LG decided to skip the Snapdragon 835 SoC this year and instead went with the older 821 chip for the LG G6.

While fans do expect LG to not make a similar mistake with the G7 next year, it is possible that the upcoming flagship could go with the current Snapdragon 835 SoC, if the company plans to launch the device as early as CES 2018 in January, as some recent reports have suggested. The company in recent years has been unveiling its flagships ahead of its competition, especially Samsung, to get a one up on them, but at the risk of outdated hardware. Interestingly, Samsung was also rumoured to unveil its upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at CES next month, but the company recently debunked the speculations.
