128 Countries Favour UN’s Call to Withdraw US Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital, 9 Oppose
Delhi, Dec 21: 128 countries voted in favour of the United Nations’ call for the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. However, nine countries opposed this move by the United Nation as well. India was listed among the countries which voted in favour of recalling the decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
As per reports, while 128 countries voted in favour of the UN’s call and nine opposed it, 35 countries were listed under the category of abstention. Among the nine countries which voted against the UN call are Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Togo and United States of America itself.
Among the prominent countries which made its stand clear in this poll are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Kuwait, Pakistan, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, UAE, United Kingdom and Yemen.
Earlier today, ahead of vote on the resolution seeking withdrawal of US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed the United Nations a ‘house of lies’.
The U.N. General Assembly held the emergency session on Thursday to vote on the draft resolution calling on the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The US has vetoed an Egyptian-drafted UN Security Council resolution that called on countries not to establish diplomatic missions in Jerusalem. The one-page Egyptian draft resolution, without any mention of the U.S. or Trump, expresses “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem”.
Triggering outrage from Palestinians and the Arab and Muslim world, and concern among Washington’s Western allies, President Donald Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on December 6 when he recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Trump, on Wednesday, threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that vote in favour of the U.N. draft resolution, and his ambassador to the world body.
